Summer in Houston comes with sunshine, stunning golden light… and sweltering heat. If you’ve been putting off booking a professional photo session for your dog or horse because of the weather — you’re not alone.

But here’s the good news: you can absolutely have a safe and beautiful session during summer — it just takes the right timing, a little planning, and a photographer who prioritizes your pet’s well-being (hi, that’s me!).

The Best Time for Summer Pet Photography in Houston

When the temperature rises, the timing of your session matters more than ever.

I only shoot during the coolest times of day:

  • Early morning (around 7–9 AM): Soft, golden light and cooler temperatures — perfect for dogs who are more active in the morning.
  • Golden hour before sunset: The light is dreamy, and it’s a little cooler than midday.

Midday sun in Houston can hit 100°F+ — and it’s not just uncomfortable, it can be dangerous. That’s why I carefully monitor the heat index and always build in time for shade breaks and water.

Why Summer Digitals Aren’t Enough — and Why It’s Worth It

There’s something special about summer. The vibrant greens, the long shadows, the way your dog or horse's coat glows in that golden light. These are the memories you’ll want to look back on one day.

But they won’t live their best life buried in your phone.

Printed portraits on your wall tell your pet’s story. Digitals are great for sharing, but prints are made for remembering.

How I Keep Your Pet Safe in Houston’s Summer Heat

Your pet’s safety is always my top priority. Here’s exactly what I do to keep things cool (literally and figuratively!):

For Dogs:

  • Shade breaks every few minutes
  • I bring portable water bowls and fresh water
  • Cooling towels or fans if needed
  • We keep things light, fun, and fast-paced — no long posing sessions in the sun

For Horses:

  • We shoot in shaded paddocks or pastures or near the barn
  • Short breaks between shots, and I always defer to how your horse is feeling
  • I work efficiently — no one wants to stand still for 30 minutes in a fly mask
  • Plus, I always prep you beforehand so we’re on the same page and your session goes smoothly.

So… Is Summer the Right Time for Your Session?

If your pet does well in the mornings or evenings, and we take the proper precautions, summer can be a wonderful time for a session. The light is gorgeous, the greens are lush, and best of all — you’re not waiting months to capture this moment in your pet’s life.

And if the heat isn’t ideal for your pet? I’ll help you find a better season or location that works. You never have to guess — I’ve got you.

Extra Summer Safety Tips for Houston Pet Parents

Even outside of a photo session, it’s important to protect your pets in this heat:

  • Avoid hot pavement – If you can’t walk barefoot, neither can your dog
  • Never leave pets in cars, even for a minute
  • Watch for signs of overheating: excessive panting, glazed eyes, drooling, lethargy
  • Bring water everywhere, and offer it frequently
  • For horses: Avoid work during peak hours and make sure they have access to shade and fly protection

Summer in Houston isn’t easy — but with a little preparation, you can still make memories that last a lifetime.
