The Unexpected Beauty of “Unplanned” Moments
More often than not, when I start talking with a new client, they immediately say some version of: “Oh, I don’t want to be in the photos.” And I truly get it. Being in front of the camera can feel uncomfortable, especially when the spotlight is meant to be on your dog or horse. But here’s the thing... something extraordinary tends to happen when you quietly step into the frame.
Sometimes it starts with a quiet interaction - a hand resting gently on a dog’s shoulder, a laugh as your horse nudges your arm. You may not even realize I’ve pressed the shutter yet. But later, when you see those images in your gallery, it’s often those unexpected, completely natural moments that stop you in your tracks.
Over the years, I’ve watched clients go from cautious to emotional - surprised by how much the photos of them with their animals moved them. This blog is all about why that transformation happens and why, even if you're camera-shy, it’s worth giving those shared portraits a moment in the light.
"I Don't Like Being Photographed" - and Other Honest Hesitations
It’s extremely common for my clients to hesitate at the idea of being in front of the lens. Some have had stressful experiences in the past, others worry about how they’ll look, or if their pet will even cooperate. I hear phrases like:
“I’m not photogenic”
“It’s really all about my dog”
“My horse is the star here, not me”
And while all of that is valid, here’s what I usually say: you are already in these moments with your pet - my camera is just here to make them visible.
I gently guide every session, building in time to breathe, relax, and settle into a calm rhythm. I also come prepared with subtle shot ideas that don’t require traditional posing. No stiff smiles, no pressure to “perform.” This is about capturing real connection - which, honestly, usually happens best when you're not focused on posing at all.
Why You Matter in the Frame Too
Including yourself in your session isn't about shifting the spotlight - it’s about honoring the relationship that’s already there. Here’s why it’s so powerful when owners step into the frame, even just for a few frames.
1. You're Part of the Story
Your pet sees you as their whole world. There’s something incredibly moving about capturing the two of you together - the relaxed trust in your dog’s eyes, the way your horse leans into your touch. These aren’t just portraits, they’re visual proof of the bond you share every day.
Sometimes it’s as simple as sitting next to your dog in the field or leaning your forehead against your horse’s. Pure, unposed moments that tell the full story of this relationship.
2. It Shifts How You Remember This Time
Years down the road, the photos of you with your animal may be the ones that matter most. Especially for clients navigating a season of transition - with aging pets or difficult goodbyes ahead - having those shared portraits becomes such a comforting legacy.
Even for clients with young, healthy animals, these portraits let you time-stamp your journey together. Not just how your dog looked, but how it felt to be with them in this chapter.
3. You Don’t Have to Pose. Really.
I promise - this isn’t about cheesing at the camera. Most of the photos I take with owners look more like everyday life: you walking side-by-side with your dog, brushing your horse’s mane, wrapping your arms around them, both relaxed under the golden light.
You don’t need to know how to pose. You don’t need to be “ready.” That’s my job - to guide, to catch those quiet sparks, and to make sure it all feels easy, not performative.
This is Bigger Than a Photoshoot
Including yourself in pet portraits is ultimately about honoring something real and lasting. These images become more than art for your wall - they are memories, love letters, and reflections of a bond that matters deeply.
So if you’ve been feeling hesitant, that’s okay. I’ll meet you where you are with patience, reassurance, and a few gently suggested moments where you might just forget I’m even holding a camera.
Trust me - ten minutes into the session, your dog’s tail will be wagging, your horse’s ears will be turned toward you, and you’ll be surprised by how natural it all feels.
