Of course, little things help - brushing out your horse beforehand, prepping your tack, even choosing flattering light. But the magic truly happens when you're both relaxed. When you show up with openness, curiosity, and love. Horses feel our energy so clearly. If you're tense, they'll mirror it. But if you're present and calm, they tend to soften too.
I always say: let the horse lead. Let them breathe, explore, and settle. My job is to meet them where they are. No need to force anything.
Tips for a Beautiful, Stress-Free Equine Session
1. Be Gentle With Expectations
Not every horse will “pose” - and they don’t have to. I work with horses as they are, reading their body language and adjusting on the fly. If your horse is feeling antsy, we’ll take movement shots. If they want to slow things down, we’ll focus on quiet connection.
Trust me: even moments that feel chaotic in the moment often translate into stunning images when guided with patience and understanding.
2. Prep Your Horse (But Don’t Aim for Perfection)
A clean, comfortable horse is a great place to start. Before the session:
- Give a full, gentle grooming

- Polish tack if it's part of the photos
- Walk them around a bit to settle nerves
- That said, don’t panic about dirt or a stray burr. We’re not here for catalog perfection. We’re here to capture the real us - you and your horse, exactly as you are.

What you wear matters - not just for the photos, but for your confidence. Choose outfits that feel true to you and comfortable to move around in, especially if we’re walking fields or mucking through pastures.
Neutral tones or rich earthy colors tend to photograph beautifully. Flowing dresses, jeans and boots, simple textures - all work well. But more than anything, focus on clothing that allows you to snuggle, pet, lean into your horse without restriction.
Bonus tip: solid colors often keep the visual focus on your bond, rather than your outfit.
4. Location Can Be Simple (Even Your Barn)
I often hear, “My boarding facility isn’t very pretty - will that ruin the photos?” Let me assure you: we don’t need rolling hills or a castle in the background.
Even a small, tree-lined corner or sunlit fence can create gorgeous framing. I know how to use light, angles, and composition to transform regular spaces into something timeless. Some of the most intimate, moving portraits I’ve taken came from seemingly ordinary barns.
